IT Firms Hiring Big in India

IT Firms Hiring Big in India

BENGALURU: The Indian IT services sector may be passing through some rough weather with challenges of automation and lower growth rates, forcing many to lay off employees and reduce the rate of hiring. But many technology MNCs in the country are continuing to hire in large numbers. Companies such as Accenture, Capgemini, Oracle, IBM, and Goldman Sachs are hiring in hundreds, some in thousands.

Accenture has 5,396 job openings in India, more than four times the openings in the US and more than 12 times that in Poland and Philippines, its other major hiring locations. French IT major Capgemini has 2,649 job openings for India, 55% of its worldwide hiring, according to the company’s website.

Oracle has 1,124 open positions for India. TOI reported last week that e-commerce giant Amazon was in process of hiring thousands in India. Their website currently lists 1,208 open positions.

Other major hirers include IBM (675 open positions), Goldman Sachs (320), Dell (285), Microsoft (235), Cisco (229), and French bank Societe Generale (185). The openings are periodically refreshed, so the total hiring in a year could be significantly more.

Hence it is needed to learn the latest trending technologies such as Hadoop, Amazon Web Services, Selenium automation testing, Angular 2, Android App Development.

The global inhouse centres (GICs) of MNCs in India are growing at 10% in terms of revenue and employ close to 770,000 people, according to IT industry body Nasscom. Consultancy firm Zinnov estimates there are 1,150 MNCs with GICs in India, and puts the employment figure at 815,000 for 2016. It is estimated that the GICs will add an additional 30,000 jobs this year on a net basis (excluding those who quit firms in the category to find jobs elsewhere). About 35% of the GICs are in Bengaluru, and 15% in NCR. “All these MNC GICs are doing their digitisation initiative in India, and most of their newly added capacities are also expected to be in India,” K S Viswanathan, VP, industry initiatives at Nasscom, said.

The job openings are heartening, given especially that four of the biggest IT services companies – TCS, Cognizant, Infosys and Tech Mahindra – saw their workforces shrink at the end of the June quarter. The current job openings by themselves don’t tell us whether the MNCs are increasing their hiring or reducing them. Accenture, for instance, had 10,700 job openings around the same time three years ago, but Capgemini had a slightly lower number three years ago than what it is now.

As a fresher looking to enter into IT field then here are the fields which exactly suits you Manual Testing, Microsoft Dot Net, Java, and Web Development.

But more and more MNCs are establishing GICs in India, among the recent ones being Saks Fifth Avenue and TransUnion. And the ones that came in the past few years are now confident enough to expand rapidly, like Lowe’s and JCPenney. Lowe’s 490,000 sq ft office space lease deal in Bengaluru was the second largest in India in the first half of this year, after that of Microsoft’s 589,000 deal, according to property consultancy Colliers International.

“If a company wants to hire 1,000 people in a quarter for things like data analytics, India is the only place where you will find people available at that kind of scale, and it will remain so,” Sandeep Mathur, former Oracle India managing director, said. MNCs, he said, had long stopped coming to India for the cost. “They need people to address their growth challenges and even automation codes have to be written by humans.”

Infosys to hire 20k this year!!

Infosys to hire 20k this year!!

Good News for Software Engineers as Infosys announced they gonna hire 20k employees this year!!!

IT services major Infosys today said it will hire 20,000 people this year as against only 400 people being asked to leave on performance grounds and termed reports of large-scale job losses as “overstated”.

Infosys COO UB Pravin Rao said the technology-driven transformation presents new opportunities for companies like Infosys.

“With respect to all the talks of layoffs, it’s regular performance based things that we do every year. The number is really 300-400, which is consistent with what we have seen every year,” Rao told reporters after a 30-minute meeting with IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

He said the country’s second largest software exporter is “creating more jobs, adding more people and letting go of only minuscule number of people, purely from performance related perspective”.

Rao met the minister along with Infosys co-Chairman Ravi Venkatesan.

He declined however to comment on views of Infosys co- founder NR Narayana Murthy that jobs can be protected if the senior executives of companies take salary cuts and invest in employee re-skilling.

Prasad also asserted that IT companies like Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys continue to hire in large numbers.

“TCS has written that they have employed 2.5 lakh people in last 3 years and this year they are going to employ 20,000 more...all this talk of sluggishness is unwarranted,” he said.

The comments come at a time when there have been reports of layoffs across the IT sector. Tech majors like Wipro, Infosys, Cognizant and Tech Mahindra have initiated annual performance reviews, a process that weeds out bottom performers or non-performers.

This has compounded fears that thousands of employees in the sector could be shown the door over the next few weeks.

The IT sector is already battling challenges in the business environment and stricter work permit regime in countries like the US, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.

Various employee unions have approached labour commissioners and state governments to intervene in the matter.

“I think all the news about job losses are overstated.

Infosys itself last year recruited over 20,000 people and this year again, we are likely to repeat similar numbers,” Rao said.

He added that in the first half of the year, the company will recruit over 10,000 people.

Time to UpSkill YourSelf

Time to UpSkill YourSelf

Bask Iyer, CIO and Executive Vice-President of Dell and VMware, has sounded a warning for information technology (IT) employees: surf the oncoming technology waves all the time and upskill yourself, otherwise be prepared to leave IT.

“I am making sure that all my IT folks are best equipped to generate revenues rather than lay them off. People without the skill-sets to go ahead to the next level in a company will go anyway, that’s just the way it is,” Iyer said in an interview to The Hindu BusinessLine.

Iyer said the onus for upskilling lies with the employees themselves and not the organisations. “As for reskilling, no organisation provides for that because even they don’t know what to train employees on,” he said.

The IT employees themselves must figure out the future and upgrade their skills accordingly, Iyer said. “The need of the hour is to upskill—ride the right technology waves, change and shift with the oncoming technology waves, much like surfing. Techies must use and get familiar with new technologies, and sometimes guess what it is much ahead of time,” he said.

New technology is transforming the nature of business at IT companies. Increasing automation and cloud computing have hit revenues. Now there is less business in maintenance and software services, the traditional domain of Indian IT companies. New technology requires reskiling, and employees incapable of reskilling will be fired.

In India, this challenge becomes bigger. There is a glut of engineers in the country and most of them are not employable. Low-quality tech education and outdated curricula are old problems but they become more pronounced with automation and emerging technology reshaping businesses.

Though emerging technology makes a large number of jobs superfluous in the tech industry, the jobs replaced by automation do not go for good. The employees who upskill with latest software training themselves stay relevant in the industry.
